Tornado lifts lid on risks of going without insurance

The Association of British Insurers has warned homeowners to
make sure they have buildings and contents cover after it
emerged that around half of the 1,500 homes hit by last week&'s
tornado in Birmingham were uninsured.
The storm hit the Sparkbrook area, one of the city's poorest
districts. Many residents cannot afford insurance; some blame
the burglary rate, which has pushed up premiums.
But the ABI said as many as one in four households in Britain do not
have insurance for home contents, while nearly one in 10 lack
buildings insurance. These figures rise significantly for lower
income groups.
Nick Bason of the ABI said: "Events in Birmingham have shown just how
important it is for people to have adequate buildings and contents
insurance. While freak weather conditions like tornados are
extremely rare, having home insurance will give householders
peace of mind."
