Moving house? ...Check your insurance first

Ulster home-owners on the move should check their household policies
before buying more insurance for furniture removal - as they may
already be covered, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has
warned.
Local estate agents say this is one of the busiest times of the year
with many house-holders here preparing to move into new properties
following the traditional Twelfth period.
And the ABI has warned it is critical to be insured when moving,
adding that the golden rule is to check existing policies for cover.
Malcolm Tarling, the ABI's advisor on general insurance, said: "If
you're moving house, the questions you should be asking your insurer
is if your household policy covers for goods in transit as well as the
level of cover."
He warns to look out for any restrictions which may be in place, such
as, the storage of furniture.
"If you don't know what level of cover is offered by your household
policy, talk to your insurer direct," he said.
Mr Tarling added that anyone moving house should also find out the
removal firm's level of liability as there may be legal consequences
if they lose any of your possessions.
And the same applies for storage where there may be some element of
liability with the company if your belongings are damaged or stolen.
Insurers also warned house- holders to put a realistic price on their
valuables, bearing in mind the cost of replacing expensive items in
the event of a mishap, such as home computers, widescreen TVs and
clothes.
And if a household policy does not cover moving day, shop around other
insurers for the best possible deal, advises the ABI spokesman.
